This year (10th January 2004) sees the opening of the new 8 person “Grand Massif Express” Gondola in the village of Samoens, lifting you straight up to Samoens 1600 in just 8 minutes. From here you are already in the heart of the Grand Massif skiing range and the meeting place of the ski school.

Samoens 1600 has it’s own extensive skiing before you even venture further afield to Flaine, Morillon, Le Carroz & Sixt.

The Grand Massif comprises over 265km of pistes, and over 80 ski lifts, and is renowned for its range of off-piste and powder skiing and snowboarding. It is truly a family resort, also offering gentler slopes and ski school for beginners and children.

In addition to the new Gondola, further investment has been provided by way of,

• new modern and re-sited equipment in the beginners' area.
• a new four-place chair lift at Damoiseaux,
• more snow cannons to extend the provision of artificial snow,
• a new skiers' bridge over the road at Saix,
• a new children's area, "jardin de neige", run by the ESF (French Ski School).

If you feel the need to venture further afield, then Les Gets is only 15 minutes away by car with it's own local skiing as well as being linked to the Portes du Soleil circuit.
The Global Ski Guide states:

"There is a vast choice of runs, and wherever one skis there is a lift to take one further afield or back. Virtually no queuing or walking".

Ideal for families as children can either take part in ski-school or be looked after for a half of whole day by the crèche facilities on offer in Samoens. A paradise for intermediates and snowboarders and much also for the advanced skier, particularly with the wealth of off-piste opportunities.

The snow records for Samoens and Flaine are extremely good. Flaine is as snow sure as you can get, and the runs right down to Samoens enjoy good and lasting snow, with many of them being north facing slopes so hold on to their snow a lot later into the season than many resorts.

One of the biggest plus points for this area is that it is still relatively undeveloped and will remain so as a lot of the land is protected by conservation orders, so hasn't attract the package tour operators, which means NO LIFT OR TRAFFIC QUEUES!!

Long may Samoens be kept a secret!
